Name: Martin Stumpe
New role: Chief technology and AI officer, Danaher
Previous role: Chief data and AI officer, Danaher
Danaher has appointed Martin Stumpe as its chief technology and AI officer, effective Oct. 1.
Stumpe joined Danaher one year ago as chief data and AI officer. Danaher created the role as part of its push to invest more in AI as “a driving force for innovation and productivity.” Stumpe’s focus on AI in healthcare dates back to when he worked at Google from 2012 to 2019.
During his time at the big tech company, Stumpe founded a cancer pathology project and applied deep learning to the detection of metastatic breast cancer. Stumpe left Google in 2019 to join Tempus, where he helped to build an AI and data science department to support activities such as response predictions.
Danaher said in a statement that Stumpe’s promotion is a “pivotal step in [its] digital transformation and its ambition to lead the next era of innovation in life sciences and diagnostics.” The company wants to accelerate the integration of AI across its business to support scientific discovery, operational efficiency and clinical impact.
Stumpe will report directly to Rainer Blair, Danaher’s CEO. Blair discussed the use of AI at Cepheid, Danaher’s molecular diagnostics company, on an earnings call in January. The company is using AI to accelerate “the technical and research aspect of R&D,” Blair said, and speed up “the integrated evidence plan that you need to get that assay to market much more quickly.”
Promoting Stumpe fills a vacancy that opened up when James Ross left Danaher in January. Ross worked as chief technology officer at Danaher before leaving to take up a similar position at energy company Phillips 66.
