Axis Spine Technologies (AST), a UK/US medical device company commercializing a modular Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion (ALIF) system, today announced the appointment of Dr. Jean-Christophe A. Leveque, MD, to its Medical Advisory Board. Dr. Leveque is Head of Neurosurgery at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington, and one of the most respected neurosurgeon voices in complex spinal surgery in the United States.
Dr. Leveque brings extraordinary clinical depth to AST's advisory function. A graduate of Amherst College (neuroscience) and Duke University School of Medicine, he completed his neurosurgery residency and a fellowship in complex spine at the University of Michigan Medical Center. His clinical expertise spans complex spinal surgery, pituitary tumors, peripheral nerve surgery, and minimally invasive spine surgery - placing him at the forefront of the specialties most relevant to AST's product portfolio. An internationally recognized researcher, Dr. Leveque has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed publications with over 3,300 citations, with a particular focus on adult spinal deformity, sagittal alignment, and the application of augmented reality in spine surgery. His leadership roles reflect his national stature: he has served as President of the Washington State Association of Neurological Surgeons, Fellow of the Scoliosis Research Society, member of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and Management Committee Chair for Spine COAP.
Dr. Leveque's appointment formalizes a collaboration with AST that has been active for the past three years. During this period, he has played a pivotal role in refining the current Axis ALIF instrumentation, contributed to the expansion of the product portfolio into lateral and oblique approaches, and driven clinical data collection with a focused emphasis on realignment outcomes in complex spine surgery. His involvement has been central to the clinical credibility underpinning AST's commercial program.
“Dr. Leveque has been a genuine partner in building the Axis Modular ALIF system from the ground up. His clinical insight, his commitment to outcomes data, and his standing within the spinal surgery community make him an invaluable member of our Medical Advisory Board as we further develop the modular cage portfolio and prepare for our next stage of growth.” - Simon Cartmell, Chairman of the Board, Axis Spine Technologies.
“I joined this development program because the modular design philosophy behind the Axis ALIF system genuinely addresses unmet clinical needs in complex spine reconstruction. I look forward to further contributing to AST’s development and scientific agenda and helping to build the evidence base that will define its next chapter as a platform technology.” - Dr. Jean-Christophe A. Leveque, MD, Head of Neurosurgery, Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle WA.
Dr. Leveque joins AST's Medical Advisory Board at a pivotal moment for the company, as it prepares to advance its Series B financing and further develop the modular cage portfolio to include lateral, oblique and transforaminal approaches. His appointment strengthens a KOL network that already includes leading spinal surgeons across the United States and reinforces AST's commitment to building a product portfolio grounded in rigorous clinical evidence.
About Axis Spine Technologies
Axis Spine Technologies is an early-commercial-stage spinal implant company advancing spinal alignment through modular precision. Its FDA 510(k)-cleared Axis Modular ALIF system provides surgeons with intraoperative control of lordosis, foraminal height, and coronal correction, each set independently, as well as patient anatomy-matching endplate options - all selected at the moment when the surgeon has the fullest understanding of the patient’s anatomy and surgical requirements.
Supported by peer-reviewed biomechanical and clinical evidence, and protected by intellectual property spanning the thoracolumbar interbody space, Axis is building a differentiated modular platform for spinal correction across the thoracolumbar spine. The company is headquartered in Leeds, UK, with active commercial operations in the United States.
