REDWOOD CITY, Calif., October 20, 2026 – Osteoboost Health, developer of the first FDA-cleared, drug-free prescription treatment for osteopenia in postmenopausal women, today announced The Menopause Bone Health Gap, a new analysis revealing how women understand and act on their bone health as they age – and where critical gaps remain.
Released in recognition of Menopause Awareness Month, the findings come from an independent survey of more than 1,000 U.S. women conducted through Centiment. The results point to a troubling disconnect between women’s fracture risk and their understanding of how they protect their bones during one of the most consequential periods for bone health.
Research shows that half of women's lifetime bone loss occurs during the menopause transition. Yet because bone loss is silent, it’s often missing from conversations about menopause – and with DEXA scans typically not recommended until age 65, many women may not know it’s happening. By the time bone loss is detected, even the most powerful osteoporosis medications cannot fully restore what’s been lost, leaving women to miss a critical window to act before the damage becomes irreversible.
Among the newly released findings:
- Nearly 1 in 4 women (23%) were shocked or very surprised to learn that 1 in 2 women over age 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis.
- Nearly half (49%) said they had started taking supplements such as calcium or vitamin D to support their bone health in the past year, while just 28% had started strength training.
- Nearly 1 in 5 women (19%) said they had avoided seeing a clinician or getting a scan because of cost at least once.
- When asked about their biggest concern if a doctor recommended prescription medication for bone loss, 26% cited fear of side effects.
“Menopause has finally become part of the mainstream health conversation, but bone health is too often left out of it,” said Laura Yecies, CEO of Osteoboost Health. “That knowledge gap has lasting consequences. Half of women’s lifetime bone loss occurs during the menopause transition, and even our most powerful osteoporosis medications cannot fully rebuild what has already been lost. Women need earlier, clearer information about their bone health status, fracture risk and the full range of evidence-based steps they can take to protect their bones.”
The new analysis builds on Osteoboost’s inaugural 2026 State of Bones Report, released in May, which found widespread gaps in bone-health awareness and screening among U.S. women. The Menopause Bone Health Gap takes the research a step further by examining what women are doing to protect their bones, how they perceive their fracture risk, and what may stand between them and effective prevention and treatment.
The findings underscore why bone health deserves greater attention during the menopause transition. Unlike symptoms such as hot flashes or sleep disruption, women cannot feel their bone density declining. According to data from NHANES and the SWAN study, a woman who enters menopause with a -1 T-score will likely have a T-score well below -2.5 by the time of a typical DEXA scan at age 65. Earlier education, screening and intervention can help women understand their risk and take steps to preserve bone health through menopause and into older age.
Osteoboost is working to bring bone health earlier into the menopause conversation and expand treatment options for women with low bone density. It’s wearable precision-vibration therapy delivers targeted mechanical stimulation to the spine and hips and is worn for 30 minutes per day. To learn more, visit www.osteoboost.com.
About the Survey:
The survey was conducted through Centiment among 1,053 U.S. women in April 2026. Respondents were asked about bone-health awareness, screening, menopause, fracture risk, prevention behaviors, treatment and barriers to care.
